On Support for the Holy See’s Efforts toward a Peaceful Settlement in Ukraine

The International Movement Global Citizens supports the efforts of the Holy See to bring an end to hostilities and achieve a lasting peace in Ukraine. We welcome the appeal made by His Holiness Pope Leo XIV on September 6, 2026, for an end to violence, for dialogue, and for peace. We share his hope that the resumption of negotiations will make it possible to achieve concrete results.

We highly value the diplomatic efforts of Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations of the Holy See. His official visit to Moscow from August 24 to 28, 2026, underscored the Holy See’s commitment to direct dialogue and the search for a peaceful solution.

We also support the diplomatic efforts of the United States, including contacts by American representatives in Moscow and Kyiv. We expect these efforts to contribute to the resumption of substantive negotiations and to progress toward bringing an end to hostilities.

A ceasefire, the protection of the civilian population, and the alleviation of human suffering should remain priorities of international efforts. Preserving diplomatic channels is of critical importance to addressing these tasks and advancing toward a sustainable peace.

We call upon all concerned parties to support the Holy See’s peacemaking efforts, demonstrate the necessary political will, and engage in good faith in the search for a diplomatic solution. Negotiations should be directed toward practical results that will help preserve human life, bring an end to hostilities, and ensure a lasting peace in Ukraine.
